Microsoft confirms Copilot AI bug exposed customers' confidential emails
18/02/2026 | TechCrunch
Microsoft has confirmed a software bug that allowed its Copilot AI to process and summarise confidential customer emails without authorisation. The issue affected Microsoft 365 customers using the AI-powered chat feature across Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
The flaw permitted the AI tool to read draft and sent messages marked with confidential labels from the beginning of the year, bypassing data loss prevention policies designed to protect sensitive information. Microsoft, which began rolling out a fix in early February, has not disclosed the total number of affected users.
