Google ditches third-party cookies replacement FLoC with Topics

Following feedback from the advertising industry, Google has announced it is no longer moving forward with its Federated Learning of Cohorts technology, which it had lined up to replace third-party cookies. The company also mentioned privacy concerns were an ongoing concern. Instead, Chrome Privacy Sandbox Product Director Vinay Goel introduced a replacement method called Topics. Described as “a new Google Privacy Sandbox proposal for interest-based advertising,” it addresses concerns without further delay. Based on users’ browsing history, Topics would identify topics representing users’ top interests and certain topics would be shared with participating sites and advertising partners.
