Doctors warned against using unapproved AI tools to transcribe patient conversations

24/06/2025 | Sky News

A Sky News investigation has revealed that doctors are using artificial intelligence (AI) software that fails to meet the required standards for recording and transcribing patient meetings. NHS England has now demanded that GPs and hospitals cease using unapproved Ambient Voice Technology (AVT) software, warning of potential data protection violations and patient risks.

This warning, issued in a June 9 letter from NHS England's national chief clinical information officer, follows earlier communication promoting the benefits of AVT for notetaking. However, the latest letter cautions that "non-compliant" AVT solutions are widely used, with many vendors failing to meet basic NHS governance standards, risking "clinical safety, data protection breaches, financial exposure, and fragmentation of broader NHS digital strategy."

The proliferation of unapproved AI products has raised concerns among healthcare professionals. Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, described the letter as "a really significant moment" and called on the government to issue guidance on which AI systems are safe for use in medical situations, as well as to support procurement processes.
