Employees consider cyberattacks bigger risk than workplace injury

New research by EcoOnline has revealed that UK employees now consider cyberattacks and data breaches the primary threat to business continuity. In a survey of 1,300 workers across the UK and Ireland, 42% of UK respondents prioritised digital threats over traditional physical risks, such as 27% for serious workplace injuries or 23% for fires and evacuations.

The findings indicate that workers increasingly integrate digital disruption into their broader concept of workplace safety. However, a significant gap in organisational preparedness exists, as only 30% of employees stated they are aware of and understand their employer’s crisis plan. This lack of readiness could impact commercial performance, as 90% of staff believe a safer environment increases productivity, and 79% would consider leaving a role due to unsafe conditions. The report suggests that employers may need to merge digital security, health and safety, and emergency planning functions to address this evolving perception of risk and ensure long-term stability.
