Italian court overturns €15m GDPR fine against OpenAI

20/03/2026 | Reuters

An Italian court has overturned a €15 million fine issued by the country's data protection authority (DPA), the Garante, against OpenAI in December 2024. The court has yet to release a formal explanation of the ruling; however, the decision follows a March 2025 temporary suspension of the fine while the merits of the case were under review. OpenAI welcomed the judgment, stating its ongoing commitment to user privacy and the benefits of AI. The Garante has declined to comment on the court's decision.
