Helen Dixon discusses Meta transfer ban, Twitter's blue tick & TikTok

07/03/2023 | Reuters

In an interview with Reuters, Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon warns that the proposed EU-US Data Privacy Framework may come too late for Meta to avoid a suspension of Facebook's transatlantic data flows. In February, Politico reported European Data Protection Board (EDPB) could issue a binding decision in the case involving Meta's data transfers to the US by 14 April. According to Ms Dixon, a ban could be in place by mid-May.

Meanwhile, Reuters reports Ms Dixon is also concerned that Elon Musk-owned Twitter launched its Twitter Blue subscription service in EU countries without consulting the Data Protection Commission (DPC), despite promising to do so. The DPC said the service raised privacy issues involving account verification. While no formal investigation has been launched, the DPC is at a "heightened state of contact with Twitter" after the company failed to follow best practice by engaging with the regulator.

Elsewhere, the Independent.ie reports Helen Dixon will meet the director of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) on Tuesday, 7 March, over potential safety issues concerning using TikTok in Ireland. Speaking to the Independent.ie, Ms Dixon said the NCSC “has made contact as they have indicated this is an area of interest to discuss”.
