UK Court rules data retention unlawful

In another success for Privacy International, the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) has ruled that the Telecommunications Act giving the police and secret services the power to collect and store connection and location data without cause from 1984 was incompatible with EU law. With this decision, the IPT follows an October ruling by the European Court of Justice from October, which determined the comprehensive and blanket logging of electronic user traces is not permitted in the EU.
