MI5's 'wild west' data-management practices challenged in court

Privacy International and Liberty have launched a legal challenge against MI5 over the security services' lack of sufficient safeguards protecting the vast amount of data it holds. The case submitted to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal seeks to prove that "MI5's data-handling practices violated the law and are incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights." Putting aside the legal and ethical questions around bulk data collection, "legal safeguards intended to prevent abuses of power" must not be ignored.
