Privacy investigation into Apple's voice assistant Siri opened in France
06/10/2025 | Politico
The Paris public prosecutor has opened an investigation into Apple over the collection of user recordings by its voice assistant, Siri. The probe, led by the cybercrime agency OFAC, follows a complaint filed in February by the French NGO, Ligue des droits de l'Homme.
The complaint was based on the testimony of a former subcontractor employee who stated that he listened to thousands of user recordings to improve Siri, claiming the data included intimate moments and could be used to identify users. The investigation seeks to address urgent questions regarding the total volume of recordings collected since 2014, the number of individuals affected, and the locations of data storage. Apple has publicly denied ever using Siri data for marketing or selling it. The French action follows an unsuccessful appeal by Le Bonniec to the data protection authorities in France and Ireland and mirrors a $95 million class action settlement Apple reached in the US over similar claims.
