Information Commissioner John Edwards has voluntarily stepped aside from his duties at the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) pending the results of an independent HR investigation. Commissioner Edwards confirmed in a LinkedIn post on Saturday that the investigation relates to him personally and began on 26 February. He further stated that he is "fully cooperating and engaged with the investigation and will report progress in due course."

The post was issued after Joseph Bambridge, Technology Reporter at Politico, submitted a Freedom of Information request on Friday via the WhatDoTheyKnow website concerning Edwards' absence from work.

For now, all we know is that the process is being conducted independently and will result in a report with recommendations for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to determine the subsequent steps. Both the ICO and DSIT have declined to share further details at this stage to protect the parties involved and maintain the integrity of the proceedings.

In the interim, chief executive Paul Arnold, the board and executive team are leading the ICO to ensure continuity in its regulatory and leadership functions.

A spokesperson for DSIT expressed support for the independent investigation, noting that it is appropriate for the Commissioner to step back while the proper process is followed
