ICO complaint filed against NHS England over Covid-era AI data training
06/06/2025 | Politico
Representatives from the British Medical Association (BMA) and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) are preparing a formal complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) concerning allegations that NHS England breached UK data protection laws by training its generative AI model, Foresight, on patient data without consent.
According to documents obtained by Politico, Foresight was trained using de-identified data from 57 million people in England, including NHS England's Data for Pandemic Planning and Research (GDPPR). NHS England has since paused Foresight's data processing and initiated an internal audit. However, due to the seriousness of the issue, the Joint GP IT Committee, representing GPs, has formally requested NHS England refer itself to the ICO.
