EU reliance on US tech companies not expected to change anytime soon

Ahead of its publication, Politico reports that the International Digital Strategy for Europe will include a recognition that breaking away from US technological dominance is unrealistic amid increasing concerns about EU over-reliance. According to a draft strategy from early April, "decoupling is unrealistic and cooperation will remain significant across the technological value chain." Furthermore, the EU appears to lack significant new proposals to re-establish Europe as a major global technology player, even as addressing the evolving transatlantic landscape becomes a key priority in Brussels. The return of Donald Trump to the US presidency and his historically confrontational approach towards Europe have renewed anxieties regarding the sovereignty of essential technologies, including social media and cloud services. There are also concerns about the potential access of US law enforcement to data handled by major companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.
