EU considers delaying implementation of AI Act provisions

During a recent meeting with digital ministers in Luxembourg, the Executive Vice-president of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, suggested that parts of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) could be delayed, "If we see that the standards and guidelines ... are not ready in time." 

Other ministers echoed her sentiments, given that pressure from industry to implement a pause is building. However, the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Digital Affairs of Poland, Dariusz Standerski, cautioned that a delay on its own is not the solution. "First, we need to have a plan: what we want to do within those additional months." Standerski said before adding that to "postpone the enforcement for 12 months and do nothing in the meantime ... would be in vain."
