Decision on Meta's EU-US data transfers delayed

Objections from EU data protection authorities (DPAs) to the Irish Data Protection Commission's (DPC) order to halt Meta's EU-US data transfers are delaying a final decision. A spokesperson for the DPC has said its fellow DPAs raised concerns during the mandated four-week consultation under Article 60 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and that it could take months to resolve the discrepancies. If issues go unresolved, as has happened previously with cases involving Big Tech companies, the Article 65 dispute resolution mechanism will be triggered. However, despite Meta's repeated threat of shutting down EU services, the delay may work out to the company's advantage. The longer it takes to resolve issues, the closer the EU and US will get to completing their negotiations over the Trans-Atlantic Data Privacy Framework
