Apple to appeal €500m for DMA violations

Apple is set to appeal the European Commission's €500 million fine for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The company accuses the EU of disregarding its attempts to comply with the law and of deciding to impose a substantial fine months before the official announcement. The dispute will test the extent to which the Commission must guide companies towards compliance before issuing fines under the DMA.

Apple executives claim that the company submitted numerous proposals to Brussels throughout 2024 but received no feedback on whether these proposals would satisfy the legal requirements. Following the Commission's decision last month that Apple's rules on how developers can communicate with users breached the DMA, the company publicly accused the Commission of changing its requirements. Apple spokesperson Emma Wilson stated that the company invested significant engineering resources and made numerous changes to comply with the law and that despite multiple meetings, the Commission continued to shift its expectations.
