Report highlights vital role of digital literacy in era of AI

A new report by the cross-party think tank Policy Connect highlights the critical role of digital literacy and inclusion in preparing individuals and businesses for success in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). Led by Lord Tim Clement-Jones and Lord Chris Holmes, the Skills in the Age of AI report argues that government policy must prioritise inclusion, digital skills, and adaptive regulation for a future-ready society.

Despite recent UK government initiatives, such as the AI Opportunities Action Plan, the report identifies "critical gaps" in AI policy, revealing a disconnect between skills policy and real-world AI adoption experiences. Policy Connect's research advocates for inclusive AI policy design, focusing on community-driven upskilling, localised public engagement, and adaptive governance to align technological change with human needs.

The report provides actionable recommendations for government, industry, education, and civil society, addressing key themes, including the importance of education and public communication, digital skills for the workforce, and regulatory safeguards for a confident society. It aims to ensure AI's benefits are widely shared, preventing anyone from being left behind in the "next industrial revolution."
