Facewatch, a company that provides facial recognition technology to the retail sector, has recorded its highest monthly total of suspect alerts ever, reflecting an unprecedented level of criminal activity. According to Facewatch, its system sent over 43,600 alerts to subscriber stores in July 2025, a 134.8% increase compared to the same month last year.
Facewatch CEO Nick Fisher said the record figures are a stark warning for retailers and their employees. The company's data for the 12 months to 31 July 2025 shows over 407,000 alerts in total, with the rising trend continuing. The alerts are intended to provide staff with immediate warnings, enabling them to take preventative action against suspected offenders. The company has also noted a rise in abuse and theft targeting charity shops and their volunteers.
