OPSCA publishes principles for the use of AI in policing

25/10/2023 | OPSCA

The Office of the Police Chief Scientific Adviser (OPSCA) has issued a set of principles for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in policing. The Covenant for Using AI in Policing has since been endorsed by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and must, therefore, be considered by developers and users of AI technology within the sector.

The principles emphasise that the use of AI in policing should be lawful, transparent, explainable, responsible, accountable, and robust and comply with established codes of practice, such as the College of Policing’s Code of Ethics. The document also highlights that it is the responsibility of chief constables and police and crime commissioners, supported by their ethics committees, to ensure the principles are upheld. Additionally, the forces’ use of AI should be subject to independent scrutiny.

The OPSCA will play a further role in supporting research into the fairness of AI applications, providing up-to-date information on their development, including sharing examples of good practice and bringing together government agencies such as the Home Office AI and Data Ethics team on matters related to the use of AI in policing.
