ORG rebukes ICO for failing to issue world cup advice to travelling fans

The Open Rights Group has posted a blog criticising the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for failing to warn UK fans travelling to Qatar to watch the world cup about the serious privacy and security risks associated with the official apps. Fans arriving in Qatar are required to download two apps: Ehteraz and Hayya. Ehteraz is a COVID-19 tracking app, while Hayya is used to gain access to stadiums and access transportation services. Worryingly, Ehteraz allows remote access to users’ pictures and videos. Data protection authorities (DPAs) in Germany, France, and Norway voiced their concerns; however, the ICO released no official guidance.
