18/09/2024 | Open Rights Group

Open Rights Group (ORG) is calling for the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) to take action over social media companies that process users' data without consent. The news follows the revelation that LinkedIn has begun processing user data to train its artificial intelligence (AI) systems without explicit consent.

LinkedIn appears to have made the change without any public notification, news of the development came via a public service announcement post on the social media platform by a user.

Mariano delli Santi, ORG Legal and Policy Officer, stressed the inadequacy of the opt-out model and the necessity of opt-in consent. He went on to say that the ICO's intransigence raises serious concerns about weaker data protection rights in the UK than in Europe. ORG are still waiting to hear from the ICO concerning their complaint about Meta using UK user data for AI training, further highlighting the need for urgent action to protect data privacy rights.
