DUA Bill amendment strengthening vulnerable people's information rights
13/05/2025 | Open Rights Group
The Open Rights Group has supported an amendment to the Data (Use and Access) Bill (DUA Bill) by Siân Berry MP that would ensure that the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has appropriate complaint-handling procedures for vulnerable people. The amendment would also ensure vulnerable individuals can appeal to the Information Tribunal if they believe the ICO failed to address their complaint.
In a related article, the ORG published a briefing paper outlining the list of DUA Bill amendments that the digital rights advocacy group supports. In addition to Siân Berry's amendment, the ORG supports Amendment 10, by Alex Sobel MP, to amend Schedule 7 of the DUA Bill and ensure that a third country cannot be considered adequate or capable of providing appropriate safeguards.
A further post addresses a further amendment that would introduce a duty for digital verification providers to record "sex at birth" of individuals. ORG, along with members of the LGBT community, are concerned that such an amendment would amount to a "transgender" label, exposing them to the risk of bias, discrimination and the potential for hate crimes.
