Ofcom opens age-assurance investigation into TikTok

Just two days after the government announced plans for a voluntary midnight social media curfew for older teenagers, Ofcom has launched an investigation into TikTok.

The regulator is investigating whether the platform is complying with its child safety duties under Section 12 of the Online Safety Act 2023 (OSA)Specifically, Ofcom is assessing whether TikTok uses proportionate systems to prevent children from encountering harmful primary priority contentand to protect vulnerable age groups from other harmful material.

The investigation will also examine whether the platform is meeting its legal obligations to deploy highly effective age assurance technology.
