Ofcom investigates 22 more adult sites over age-check rules

Communications regulator Ofcom has launched investigations into at least 22 adult-themed websites for failing to meet new age-check requirements under the Online Safety Act 2023 (OSA). The regulator is checking whether sites run by companies, including Cyberitic, LLC and Web Prime Inc., have implemented effective age check mechanisms. The sites collectively have over eight million unique monthly UK visitors and could face further action if non-compliant.

In related news, the Open Rights Group has published a briefing paper on VPNs and the OSA. The paper looks at the legitimate uses of VPNs, why website operators shouldn't be forced to detect VPN use and which age groups are likely to use them to circumvent age controls.
