OECD publishes new responsible AI guidance for businesses

19/02/2026 | OECD

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has published new responsible AI guidance to support businesses in taking advantage of the opportunities the technology offers. The OECD's new Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible AI provides businesses with an internationally agreed, government-backed framework to build trust in AI systems. The guidance addresses a widening gap between rapid technological advancement and the implementation of appropriate safety guardrails, which policymakers and global businesses currently face.

The framework offers a step-by-step approach for enterprises to establish internal management systems. These systems are intended to proactively identify and mitigate all primary risk areas, including those concerning human rights, labour standards, and environmental impacts.

A central feature of the guidance is its whole-of-value-chain approach. It provides specific recommendations and implementation examples for various stakeholders, including data and infrastructure providers, financiers, and end-users. By involving all actors in the AI lifecycle, the OECD aims to foster more resilient value chains that can withstand supply chain disruptions. In addition, the guidance includes a roadmap that demonstrates how these steps align with other existing AI risk management frameworks, helping businesses navigate various regulatory expectations simultaneously.
