Austrian privacy and digital rights advocacy group NOYB has published its latest annual report, revealing that its legal work has led to administrative fines totalling €1.69 billion. In 2024, NOYB filed 36 new complaints, 11 of which were against Meta, with a further 9 targeting X over their artificial intelligence (AI) training plans. Other complaints were filed against the use of Microsoft software in schools, Google Chrome and the European Parliament following a data breach.
NOYB also obtained several new decisions from data protection authorities (DPAs), including against Netflix, resulting in a €4.75 million fine. In addition, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) agreed with NOYB concerning illegal microtargeting by the European Commission, while the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled in Case C-446/21 against Meta over its Facebook platform, limiting the use of personal data for online advertising.
