NIST publishes post-deployment AI monitoring report

09/03/2026 | NIST

A new report by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) addresses the challenges of monitoring artificial intelligence (AI) systems after deployment. The NIST AI 800-4 report identifies six common monitoring categories and documents significant barriers, gaps, and open questions to guide future research. The report follows a series of practitioner workshops by the Centre for AI Standards and Innovation and a review of existing literature on continuous monitoring challenges.

By categorising monitoring themes via specific coding methodologies, the report aims to provide a structured framework for AI practitioners. Its primary objective is to document the technical and organisational difficulties in continuous AI oversight, ensuring that deployed systems remain reliable and safe.
