Irish DPC seeks additional €10m budget to address ‘soft on tech’ perception
02/12/2025 | Irish Independent
The Data Protection Commission (DPC) is seeking an additional €10 million increase in its annual budget, proposing to raise spending to €39.8 million in 2026 to combat what it called the unfair narrative that it is soft on Big Tech. In its pre-budget submission, the DPC argued that upholding the fundamental right to data protection is a national priority.
The DPC, which acts as the lead regulator for several global technology companies, stated it is under intense scrutiny from EU member states and MEPs regarding its regulatory capacity. The DPC contrasted its entire 280-strong workforce and €29.4 million annual spending with the 270 staff and €55 million budget dedicated by the European Commission just to the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The DPC noted that the incoming Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), as well as EU laws on political advertising, will significantly increase its workload, requiring the expansion of all expert teams. The DPC emphasised that continued investment is necessary to build its international reputation and confidence in Ireland’s regulatory environment. The DPC aims to hire 78 new staff this year.
