Dixon to return to digital regulation after next March
13/11/2025 | Irish Independent
Former Irish Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon expects to return to the digital regulation field after her 12-month cooling-off period ends in March. Dixon, who completed two five-year terms at the DPC and spent a year as a Commissioner with telecommunications regulator ComReg, stepped down from regulatory roles in February to gain a new perspective on digital challenges.
Reflecting on her tenure at the DPC, Dixon said she wished she had spent more time engaging the public on digital issues like the tension between safety and privacy. Regarding potential EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) carve-outs for small companies, she argued against limiting obligations by size, stating that the risk-based approach of the GDPR is correct, as risks to individuals can arise regardless of an organisation's size.
