ISO 27701 privacy management standard receives significant update

14/10/2025 | International Organization for Standardization

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published an update to its international standard for privacy information management systems, ISO/IEC 27701:2025, which introduces several significant changes.

Most notably, the standard is now a standalone management system, meaning organisations no longer require a separate ISO 27001 certified Information Security Management System (ISMS) for compliance. However, organisations with an existing ISMS can still integrate the two systems.

The standard retains a jurisdiction-neutral framework, making it an ideal fit for multinational organisations seeking to create a unified privacy management system across different regulatory environments.

ISO 27701 is classified as a "Type A" standard, allowing external bodies to certify an organisation's conformance. Its design uses ISO's harmonised structure, ensuring clauses and terminology match other key management standards, such as ISO 27001 and ISO 42001, for easier integration.
