It can be counterproductive to punish cybersecurity errors

A survey found that 4 out of 10 UK businesses take disciplinary action against employees who make mistakes such as falling for simulated phishing scams. Forms of punishment include naming and shaming employees, decreasing access privileges and locking computers until appropriate training has been completed. However, it has been identified that doing so has a “highly detrimental” impact on staff, with punishments increasing anxiety levels and could actually reduce their cyber-resilience.
