Europol calls for tougher data laws to fight cybercrime

During Europol's 2025 Annual Cybercrime Conference, speakers warned that criminals are outpacing regulators and law enforcement by rapidly exploiting encryption, anonymisation, and new technologies. This creates a critical dilemma regarding lawful access to data for investigations, which, according to Europol's executive director, can lead to terrorist plots advancing and organised crime thriving.

European Commissioner Magnus Brunner emphasised the urgency for a coordinated response, calling for the mainstreaming of security into all European policies and strengthening Europol's mandate. The conference, attended by 500 global participants, focused on "Dissecting data challenges on the digital frontlines," with delegates examining five key areas, including balancing data access with digital rights, improving cross-border data sharing, and updating laws to keep pace with technological change.
