Seeing smart glasses through a positive lens

In a blog article, Paul Arnold MBE, Chief Executive Officer at the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), discusses the need for a public debate on the emergence of smart glasses and other AI-enabled wearable devices.

Arnold observed that public debate has legitimately centred on privacy, surveillance, and harassment, particularly incidents where individuals are recorded without consent. However, drawing on his personal experience as a severely visually impaired person, he emphasised that the technology provides vital accessibility benefits. By integrating cameras, AI, and audio feedback, wearables allow users to navigate environments independently. 

Noting that the core components are familiar smartphone features made smaller, cheaper, and more effortless to wear, Arnold cautioned against viewing the technology as inherently positive or negative. He warned that irresponsible deployment creates harmful stigma for legitimate users, urging regulators to implement effective safeguards that mitigate intrusive surveillance risks without obstructing transformative societal benefits.
