Insurance worker given suspended sentence for accessing personal data

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has announced that Rizwan Manjra, a 44-year-old motor insurance worker from Bolton, received a suspended prison sentence for unlawfully accessing personal information while working at Markerstudy Insurance Services Limited (MISL) in Manchester.

Manjra's misconduct was uncovered after an MISL internal investigation revealed that he was involved in 160 of 185 claims despite having no legitimate reason for accessing them.

A subsequent ICO investigation by the ICO, which included a search of Manjra's home, identified that he had been sending personal data to another individual via mobile phone. On October 30, 2024, Manjra pleaded guilty to an offence under the Computer Misuse Act 1990. He was sentenced on November 11 to six months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete 150 hours of community service.
