Information Commissioner discusses regulating AI and tech

On Wednesday, 15 May 2024, Information Commissioner John Edwards delivered a speech at the New Scientist Emerging Technologies summit. In his remarks, Edwards stressed the importance of data protection laws in regulating new technologies and ensuring the security of personal information. Concerning fears that the "world of tech and AI is a regulatory wild west," Edwards highlighted that the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is "here and we're enforcing." He went on to clarify that there is "no regulatory gap between the digital world and the real world. Data protection law is principles-based and it’s technology neutral. So, no matter what the tech is, if it involves personal information, there are protections in place for people."
