On Tuesday, 10 September 2024, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) published its response to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's (DSIT) consultation for a proposal to increase the annual data protection fees payable by controllers to the ICO.
In its response, the ICO confirmed that it shares DSIT's goal to maximise the opportunities presented by safe, responsible, and innovative uses of data. Acknowledging the importance of ensuring trust, confidence, and clarity in the use of personal data, the ICO emphasised the need for an increase in financial resources to remain effective in discharging its regulatory responsibilities. The ICO proposed that the increase outlined within the consultation is both reasonable and proportionate. The ICO explained that the increase in funding will allow for the completion of its transformation as a regulator and the continued support of its highest priority work, highlighting areas such as children's privacy, advertising technology, and artificial intelligence (AI).
