ICO responds to Commons Committee inquiry into AI governance

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has responded to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee's inquiry into the governance of artificial intelligence (AI). In its response, the ICO points out that not all AI systems involve the processing of personal data, but those that do use it during the design, training, testing and deployment phases. These are the use cases the ICO the ICO focuses its response as a regulator. As documented in its ICO25 three-year plan, the ICO has identified AI as a strategic priority, building on its existing work in the area. The ICO answered questions regarding the effectiveness of the UK's current AI governance framework, its strengths and weaknesses, where improvements can be made in the areas of transparency and communication to the broader public, along with how AI decisions can be better scrutinised, challenged and regulated. The ICO also responded to the question of whether the current legal framework is fit for purpose.
