The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has released a statement concerning its ongoing investigation into Imgur following news reports that the US-owned online image hosting and sharing platform is currently unavailable to users in the UK.

The ICO investigation opened in March 2025 focuses on how Imgur uses children's information and its approach to age assurance under the Age-Appropriate Design Code (Children's Code).

The ICO stated that it reached provisional findings and issued a Notice of Intent to impose a monetary penalty on MediaLab on 10 September 2025While no decision has been made regarding whether or not the regulator will fine the online platform, the ICO stressed that Imgur's exit from the UK does not absolve it of responsibility for any prior infringement of data protection law and that its investigation remains active. Safeguarding children's data is a key priority for the regulator, which will continue to hold online services accountable.
