ICO opens investigation into Department of Health and Social Care

The ICO has launched an investigation into the use of personal email and private messaging applications within the Department of Health and Social Care. At a time when the need for transparency has never been greater, news that ministers and senior officials are using alternative means of correspondence such as private email accounts to conduct sensitive official business is highly concerning.  The investigation will establish whether the use of private correspondence channels led to breaches of freedom of information or data protection law.  

UPDATE: 080721 - theCanary reports Health Minister Bethell under pressure following allegations that he routinely used private email accounts to discuss government business.
