ICO issues £60k GDPR fine to law firm
16/04/2025 | ICO
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has issued a £60,000 monetary penalty to DPP Law Ltd after a personal data breach in June 2022 led to the theft of over 32GB of data and resulted in highly sensitive and confidential personal information belonging to 791 individuals being published on the dark web.
DPP Law first became aware of the breach when the National Crime Agency (NCA) made contact to advise them of the incident and that information relating to their clients had been posted on the dark web. Despite this, the law firm failed to notify the ICO for a further 43 days.
Following an investigation, the ICO found that the law firm had failed to implement relevant controls to ensure the appropriate security of the personal data, a violation of Articles 5(1)(f), 32(1) and 32(2) of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The ICO also highlighted a violation of Article 33(1) for failing to notify the regulator within 72 hours of becoming aware of the breach.
An article in The Register reports the law firm disagrees with the ICO's conclusions and will appeal the decision.
