ICO issues cybersecurity tips for small businesses
17/09/2025 | ICO
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has issued a reminder to small businesses, urging them to implement robust security measures to protect personal information. The warning follows government figures estimating that businesses experienced 7.7 million cybercrimes last year.
The ICO recommends several practical steps, including backing up data, using strong passwords and multi-factor authentication, and remaining wary of suspicious emails. Businesses should also take care when sharing data, limit access to essential personnel, and dispose of old IT equipment securely. In the event of a cyberattack that results in a data breach, the ICO reminds SMEs that they are required to report the incident to the ICO within 72 hours.
