The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has issued an official reprimand to Levales Solicitors LLP after a security incident led to a personal data breach affecting 8,234 UK individuals, of which 863 individuals were deemed at high risk because of the nature of the data involved. An investigation revealed that a threat actor accessed Levales' cloud-based server using legitimate credentials and subsequently published data on the dark web. The ICO issues the reprimand due to failings of Articles 32(1)(b) and 32(1)(d) of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which relate to implementing appropriate data security controls such as encryption and subsequently testing, assessing and evaluating the effectiveness of such technical and organisational measures.
