ICO highlights proactive publication improvements for public authorities

In a blog article for the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), Deborah Clark, ICO Upstream Regulation Manager, highlights the benefits of publishing information proactively under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The article focuses on publication schemes having engaged with more than 70 public authorities, only to find that 18 still don't have one. The ICO is clear to point out that public authorities shouldn't consider their publication schemes as a "legal requirement" but rather as a tool to "help people find, or be directed to, relevant information that has already been published." This view is inline with a public poll, which found 33.5% of respondents agreed compared with 23.5% that disagreed. The article also highlights the need for public authorities to publish information concerning their compliance statistics.
