ICO fines sole trader £200,000 for sending almost 1 million spam text messages

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has issued a £200,000 monetary penalty to a sole trader for sending 966,449 spam text messages promoting debt solutions and energy-saving grants without valid consent, in violation of regulations 22 and 23 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PEC Regulations). The campaign resulted in 19,138 complaints to the 7726 spam reporting service. An accompanying enforcement notice orders Bharat Singh Chand to cease sending unauthorised marketing messages.
