How the ICO ensured NHS Covid app maintained privacy protections

In a blog article, Ian Hulme, Director of Regulatory Assurance for the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), discusses the work his team contributed towards the ultimately successful NHS COVID-19 contact-tracing app developed by the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the Welsh Government. Of the advice and support the ICO provided to the DHSC, Hulme explained, "our teams worked hard to ensure that data protection law wasn’t a barrier to this innovation and privacy considerations were built into the lifecycle of the app – from design to decommission." The app will be officially decommissioned this week.
