Niamh Sweeney addresses concerns over DPC appointment

The recently appointed third Irish Data Protection Commissioner, Niamh Sweeney, addressed the scrutiny surrounding her professional background at the IAPP Global Summit 2026 in Washington, DC, on Tuesday. Sweeney began her five-year term in October 2025, joining fellow Commissioners Dale Sunderland and Des Hogan to fill the final statutory slot at the Data Protection Commission (DPC).

Sweeney defended her position by stressing her legal obligations as a statutory officer. To maintain the DPC's integrity, she has agreed with Sunderland and Hogan to recuse herself from any decisions involving Meta or Stripe that relate to her employment between 2015 and 2022.

Furthermore, Sweeney argued that her industry and policy experience provide a valuable, distinct skill set that complements the existing DPC skill set. As such, Sweeney expressed a desire to see more individuals with similar backgrounds join regulatory bodies.
