MEPs reach preliminary agreement on Digital Omnibus proposals for AI

12/03/2026 | IAPP

MEPs have reached a preliminary political agreement on amendments to the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) as part of its Digital Omnibus proposals.

Following a meeting on 11 March, the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) and the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) will hold a formal vote on 18 March. The compromise includes significant extensions to compliance deadlines for high-risk AI systems, moving requirements listed in Annex III to December 2027 and those in Annex I to August 2028. The extensions are intended to provide legal certainty and allow national authorities more time to prepare technical standards and guidance.

Politico reports that the agreement also introduces stricter measures against the generation of non-consensual sexual images, prohibiting AI systems from manipulating or creating realistic intimate depictions of identifiable persons without consent except where companies implement effective safety measures to prevent such misuse.
