Research and consulting company Gartner predicts that by 2026, at least 500 million smartphone users will be regularly making verifiable claims using a digital identity wallet (DIW). According to Gartner, the shift toward portable digital identity (PDI) is already underway, as solutions based on PDI are starting to mature, reducing the demand for standalone identity verification (IDV) over the next five years.
Challenges with the current IDV model, which involves asking the user to present a photo ID along with a selfie, are limited to core identity data, such as name, date of birth and address. With more processes moving online, the need to tie other attributes to a user's identity, such as educational or workplace qualifications, is increasing.
Portable digital identity solutions are expected to replace repeated identity verification, offering users control over security and privacy. Governments, including the European Commission with its eIDAS Regulation, are taking action to make DIWs available to citizens by 2026.
In related news, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) has announced that the European Commission requested that it provide support for the certification of European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallets.
