40% of businesses will be affected by shadow AI security incidents
20/11/2025 | Gartner
New research by Gartner predicts that by 2030, over 40% of global organisations will experience security and compliance incidents due to the use of unauthorised, or shadow, artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Gartner's analysis revealed several critical blind spots that CIOs must urgently address to safeguard enterprise AI initiatives.
Shadow AI is a major risk, with 69% of organisations reporting evidence or suspicion of its use, leading to potential intellectual property leakage and data exposure. Other key blind spots include AI technical debt from rapid, poorly documented development, the risk of skills erosion from over-reliance on AI, and challenges related to data and AI sovereignty due to emerging global regulations.
