Italian DPA fines Clubhouse social media network €2m

06/12/2022 | Garante

The Italian data protection authority (DPA), the Garante, has fined Alpha Exploration, owner of the social media platform Clubhouse, €2 million for EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) violations. The DPA cited a lack of transparency related to data use, the ability for users to store and share audio without consent, sharing of account information without a legal basis and indefinite data retention limits for recordings. In addition, the Garante said Alpha Exploration would implement measures to protect users and conduct a data protection impact assessment (DPIA) on data processed through Clubhouse.

The latest user statistics reveal Clubhouse have 10 million global users in 2022. In 2021 around 220,000 UK users had downloaded the app.
