Garante investigates apps accessing phone mics for ads

The Italian data protection authority, the Garante, has launched an investigation into applications accessing users' microphones to collect and sell personal data without express consent. The investigation is responding to reports from users who have seen targeted advertising on their smartphones after speaking about a specific topic. The Garante will analyze commonly downloaded apps for clear privacy notices and proper consent collection in collaboration with the Guardia di Finanza's Special Privacy and Technological Fraud Unit.
